Co-workers raising funds for bank teller

May 25, 2005

A teller as popular among customers as any at First State Bank and Trust in Basehor has grown ill and fellow employees are doing what they can to help.

Said Jill Snyder, First State Bank and Trust retail office supervisor, of teller Cheri Brown, "She's awesome with the customers. ... She's everybody's favorite teller. She is a hard worker, always, always shows up to work and is a wonderful person."

Brown, 42, of Tonganoxie, has worked at the bank for the last seven years. She was recently diagnosed with stage-four lung cancer and bank officials report that tumors have spread to her brain. Brown was scheduled to undergo treatments at an area hospital last week.

As testament to Brown's work ethic, Snyder said she wanted to return to work.

"She wanted to come back, but she's too sick," Snyder said.

Bank employees are sponsoring fund-raisers to help Brown with medical expenses and encourage customers in the community to participate. All proceeds will go to Brown and her family.

Clear-colored bracelets from the Lung Cancer Society, emblazoned with the words, Breathe Deeply, are on sale at the bank for $6 a piece. The bracelets are similar to the Live Strong bracelets in honor of cyclist Lance Armstrong, a cancer survivor. Also available will be brochures advertising Tupperware products. Again, proceeds from the sales will go toward Brown and her family. An account for patrons to donate to Brown has also been set up at the bank.

First State Bank and Trust is at 1106 N. 155th St. in Basehor. The bank also has two locations in Tonganoxie and customers may donate to Brown at those locations as well. For additional information, contact Snyder at (913) 724-2121.
