Former THS player helps Dodge City upset No. 1 Butler
A former Tonganoxie football player was part of a big upset in the junior college ranks last month.
Dustan Sprowls, who graduated from Ton-ganoxie High School in 2004, plays special teams and is a tight end for Dodge City Community College.
The Con-quistadors defeated top-seeded Butler County, 23-17, on Oct. 29 in the second round of the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference playoffs.
Butler County (9-1) came into the game as the No. 1 team in the National Junior College Athletics Association, but the loss likely moved them out of contention for the national championship, which the Grizzlies last won in 2003.
With the victory, Dodge City went from unranked to No. 15 in the NJCAA polls. Dodge City played No. 11 Coffeyville in the conference championship, but fell to the Red Ravens, 33-12. Coffeyville improved to 9-2, while Dodge City fell to 7-4. Both teams likely will receive bowl invitations.
Kaleb Lawrence, a 2005 THS graduate, is a member of the Butler County football team. He was a redshirt as a freshman this season for the Grizzlies.
