10 years ago: June 26, 1991

The city of Tonganoxie was taken back decades to the days of tie-dye for a few days when the “Deadheads,” followers of the Grateful Dead, came to town. The followers spent the weekend at the Tonganoxie State Lake, waiting for the big concert on June 24.

Deaths: Robert W. Gael, commander, U.S. Navy, retired, 76, Tucson, Ariz., died June 9, 1991; Charles Elmer Haling, 73, Lansing, died June 16, 1991; Richard L. Smith, 62, Tonganoxie, died June 11, 1991.

Births: Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Cranor, Tonganoxie, announce the birth of a son, Christopher Allen, on June 3, 1991; Mr. and Mrs. Duane Newton announce the birth of a son, Kyle James, on June 13, 1991.

25 years ago: June 23, 1976

Deaths: W.W. (Bill) Clark, Basehor, died June 13, 1976, at the age of 73; Leonard E. Burke, Tonganoxie, died June 19, 1976, at the age of 75; Hugh Meegan, 80, Hinton, Okla., died June 19, 1976.

Mr. and Mrs. Richard Tinberg returned to their home in Goleta, Calif., on Thursday. Mrs. Tinberg has been visiting her mother who has been in North Kansas City Hospital for two weeks.

Springdale News: Mr. and Mrs. Tom Urban, Arlington, Texas, are the parents of a baby girl born June 18, 1976. They have named her Shelley Marie.

The Tonganoxie Senior Citizens met June 14 for their regular meeting at the 4-H Building. Mr. and Mrs. Horace Gillespie were honored in recognition of their 56th wedding anniversary this month. Mr. and Mrs. James Drake will observe their 48th anniversary.

50 years ago: July 5, 1951

Deaths: Tom M. Conrad, 46, Linwood, died Friday evening; Mrs. R.H. Needham, 76, Fort Worth, Texas, died Wednesday; Mrs. Carrie Belle Brune, 72, Tonganoxie, died very suddenly Friday; Mrs. Macey E. Atwood, 72, Sabetha, died Wednesday.

John Lyman McCaffrey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roche McCaffrey, who enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, left Friday for San Antonio, Texas.

Basehor: Mr. and Mrs. Charles Newman announce the birth of an eight-pound, 11-ounce daughter on June 29.

John Wallin brought in some gooseberries from the Pomeroy farm as big as marbles. Mr. Wallin has made quite a hobby out of his vegetable, fruit and flower gardens.

Mrs. John Heiser, Atchison, spent several days last week in Tonganoxie with her mother, Julia Klamet.

The husband of a June bride thinks he got some brain power along with looks. She made some jelly and claimed to have discovered a new formula for synthetic rubber.

James Watson, new manager of the Leavenworth-Jefferson Electric Co-op, is a Tonganoxie resident.

75 years ago: June 17, 1926

The Tonganoxie Swimming Pool is going over big. In fact, the patronage of the pool is more by far than was expected so early in the season. The pool was opened May 29, and there have been 1,756 single admissions sold up to the close of business June 13.

Walter Neibarger, Eskridge, was a guest of the editor and family last Sunday.

A very enjoyable time was had last Sunday when about 50 relatives and friends met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lincoln Stafford to celebrate Mr. Stafford’s 65th birthday and for a family reunion of the Stafford and Todd families, it being 50 years since some of them had met together.

Death: Allen Lee Vigus, son of Charles and Sarah Vigus, was born Nov. 1, 1878, in Kentucky, and departed this life June 9, 1926.

100 years ago: June 27, 1901

A Kansas City banana wagon brought a supply of bananas this week.

The Zoellner-Wark Mercantile Co. is now located in its new quarters.

McLouth is putting in a telephone exchange and is starting with 40 members.

The Mirror has furnished Henry Geib with a supply of elegant advertising fans.

The county attorney and sheriff have run slot machines having an element of chance out of Leavenworth. A gambling slot machine is easier disposed of than a crap or poker game.
