TJHS eighth-grade girls defeat Xavier
The Tonganoxie Junior High eighth-grade girls basketball team defeated Xavier, 27-22, and then lost to Basehor-Linwood, 25-20, last week, moving the Warriors' record to 3-2.
TJHS jumped to a 13-1 lead in the first quarter against Xavier, but let the Mustangs back in the game in the third quarter as Xavier outscored TJHS, 12-5, in that period.
Madie Yates led the team in rebounds with nine, followed by Shelby Heskett with five. Lauren Hall led the team in assists with four.
Scoring for the Warriors were: Yates 10, Hall 7, Abby Eisman 6, Heskett 2, Angela Jacobs 1.
Against Basehor-Linwood, the Warriors had several girls in foul trouble in the first half and were down, 15-8, at intermission. The Warriors, though, battled back against the Bulldogs. TJHS trailed by three late before losing by five.
The Warriors did hit the boards hard against a taller opponent, pulling down 29 rebounds.
Leading the team in rebounding was Eisman with 12, followed by Yates and Jacobs. Eisman, Hall and Andie Jeannin led the team in steals. And Ali George, Jessica Stinson, Hillary Saathoff and Jacobs came off the bench.
Scoring against Basehor-Linwood were: Heskett 10, Hll 4, Jeannin 2, Saathoff 2, Yates 2.
The B-team lost to Clark, 32-9, and Basehor-Linwood, 21-12. Scoring in the Clark game were: Alisha Barnes 3, Nikki Pennington 2, Jessica White 2, Ashlee Long 2. Against the Bulldogs, these Warriors scored: Angela Jacobs 8, White 2, Carissa Nott 1, Bethany Lees 1.
Other players on the team are: Jourdan Tanking, Emily Jefferies, Mariah Bagby, Danielle Henderson, Preslie Pence and Sarah Swaim.
