Tonganoxie soccer players named to all-region team

By Shawn Linenberger - | Nov 16, 2005

Tonganoxie landed several soccer players on the Kansas Soccer Coaches Association all-region team in Class 4-3-2-1A.

The Chieftains had seven players earn all-region honors. Sophomore Josh Nowasell earned first-team honors as a midfielder, while his brother, Alex, a junior, was named as a top defender.

Tonganoxie also had five players earn honorable mention recognition.

Derek O’Brien, Pepe Orosco-Mesce, David Hassinger, Micah Titterington and Jacob Poterbin were honorable mention selections. O’Brien, Orosco-Mestre, Hassinger and Titterington are seniors, while Poterbin is a junior.

Tonganoxie coach Kenneth Lott said he was pleased that some of his players earned recognition for their play.

“I know that it helps the kids and their morale,” Lott said. “I think it’s also kind of nice to know that we are actually talked about.

“I think there’s some other people who should have gotten some notoriety, but there were a lot of good players this year.”

As for the players who did make the team, three will be back next year — the Nowasell brothers and Poterbin — for more action with the Chieftains.

“It’s encouraging that they’re coming back,” Lott said. “I’m looking for next year to be better than it was this year.

“It will be my second year so I think people will know what to expect.”

Some players already are preparing for next fall. Lott said a few players are competing in indoor leagues with players from Piper, Bonner Springs and Basehor-Linwood.

Lott noted it’s worthwhile to compete occasionally with other players for diversity.

The Tonganoxie coach expects more of his players to sign up for indoor leagues around Jan. 1. Some weren’t able to participate in the first session, which started earlier this month. However, indoor leagues usually run about eight weeks, so players will be able to jump in at the first of the year.

“We’re talking with other Kaw Valley coaches, so if there’s interest, we can get enough together for a team,” Lott said.

Tonganoxie finished the season at 5-12 after losing in the first round of the playoffs to Kansas City Christian.
