Tonganoxie picked as site for 4A volleyball substate
The Tonganoxie volleyball team hopes a home-court advantage will help the Chieftains advance to the Class 4A state tournament later this month in Salina.
The Kansas State High School Activities Association last week announced that Tonganoxie is one of eight substate sites. Abilene, Labette County, Augusta, Clearwater, Iola, Marysville and Ulysses also will be substate sites.
Basehor-Linwood, Bishop Ward, Bonner Springs, De Soto, Eudora, Piper and Sumner Academy will join Tonganoxie at the postseason tournament.
Substate will somewhat resemble the Tonganoxie Invitational, which was played Sept. 24.
Of the eight substate teams, six were at the Tonganoxie Invitational. De Soto and Sumner are the only teams that were not at the invitational.
Eudora won that tournament, posting a perfect 7-0 record. The Cardinals defeated Manhattan in the tourney finals.
In 3A, McLouth's volleyball team will travel to Silver Lake for its substate tournament. Joining MHS will be Silver Lake, Maur Hill (Atchison), Pleasant Ridge, Atchison County, Horton, Oskaloosa and Rossville.
Other 3A sites are Burlington, Caney Valley, Hoisington, Osage City, Phillipsburg and Rock Creek.
Substate will be played Oct. 22 in six classes at 36 sites across the state.
State tournaments will be Oct. 28 and 29 at various venues. 6A and 5A will be played at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka.
Classes 4A and 3A will be at the Bicentennial Center in Salina.
And 2A and 1A tournaments will be played at Busch-Gross Coliseum in Hays.
