Survivor of crash remains hspitalized
The wife of a southern Leavenworth County man who was killed in a two-vehicle accident at Kansas Highway 32 and 238th Street remained in serious condition Tuesday at the University of Kansas Hospital.
Janet Bailey's husband, 66-year-old Elden Bailey, died from injuries suffered in the accident. Elden Bailey, who was driving the couple's vehicle, was pronounced dead at 3:20 p.m. last Wednesday at the University of Kansas Hospital.
The accident occurred about noon last Wednesday south of the Reno Township Fire Department.
According to Kansas Highway Patrol reports, Thomas R. Sheppard, 46, Lawrence, was heading east in a 2004 F-150 truck behind Bailey's 1992 Buick Century on K-32 when Elden Bailey tried to turn left, or north, onto 238th Street. Sheppard's truck rear-ended the Baileys' car, Kansas Highway Patrol reports said.
Sheppard was wearing a seat belt, while the Baileys were not, reports said.
Bryce Renne, a nurse who lives near the wreck site arrived at the accident scene and dialed 911 at 12:06 p.m. She said first responders could not open the doors of the vehicle. Instead, they communicated with the man and woman through an opening in the back of the vehicle, which had been pushed into the back seat of the vehicle from the truck's impact. Jaws of Life was used to get the Baileys out of the vehicle.
"We couldn't get to them," Renne said.
Elden Bailey was a Reno area resident.
