Police centering on suspect in kidnap attempt

April 12, 2006

Tonganoxie police have a suspect they think is connected to an attempted abduction that occurred April 2.

The suspect is an 18-year-old Kansas City, Kan., man for whom Tonganoxie and Kansas City, Kan., police have been searching.

On April 2, two girls reported that two men drove up to them while they were playing outside and asked them to get in their van. The girls said they didn't know the men. A witness reported the van's license plate information to police, who matched the van to a 1989 Chevrolet Astro.

The owner of that vehicle is the 18-year-old man, police Sgt. Billy Adcox said. Adcox has spoken with the man by phone, but the man has refused to come to the police station for further questioning. The man is a former Tonganoxie resident, Adcox said.

On Monday, Adcox said that he was turning over information from the case to the Leavenworth County attorney's office. From the evidence, the attorney's office will decide whether to issue a warrant for the suspect's arrest and whether to file charges.

Last week, using a photo taken at the Leavenworth County Jail, Adcox showed the girls a photo lineup, but the girls did not see either of the men in the lineup of suspects.

Adcox said it was hard to determine what the next step in the case would be regarding the county attorney.

"I don't know what the county prosecutor is going to decide, or what they're going to do," Adcox said.

Both the girls are 10 years old, one from Tonganoxie and the other from Kansas City, Kan. They told police they were playing outside together in the 100 block of 12th Street when a black van with a silver stripe pulled up. They said the driver was in his early 20s, while a passenger was in his late 30s or early 40s.

The driver, the girls reported, got out of the van and twice told the girls to get in the van. After being approached by the driver, the girls fled to the Tonganoxie girl's home and her mother called the police, Adcox said.

The next day, police went to Kansas City, Kan., in search of the vehicle.

Through his investigation, Adcox said he's trying to determine whether the 18-year-old suspect was the driver or the passenger.

Police have not made contact with the other man in the van, nor do they have any leads, Adcox said.
