THS sweeps Piper team
Phil Loomis' Tonganoxie High baseball team suddenly is riding a three-game winning streak.
After defeating Basehor-Linwood, 4-3, Friday in a make-up game, the Chieftains came back Monday for a doubleheader sweep of Piper.
THS won the first game, 8-6, before winning a 16-13 slugfest in the second game.
The Chieftains improved to 3-5 overall and 1-1 in Kaw Valley League play.

Tonganoxie was down, 3-0, in the first game, but battled back. Trailing 5-3 heading into the sixth, Tonganoxie plated five runs and took the lead. THS held on for the victory.
Jordan Diekmann went 2-for-3 with a single, double and an RBI. Keith Wentz-Hall went 1-for-4 and scored two runs.
In the second game, the Chieftains jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the top of the first. But Piper rallied for four of its own runs and tied the game.
Loomis said he brought Logan Forbis up from junior varsity to pitch against the Pirates in the second game.
Forbis had a shaky start, but he started getting his pitches down as the game progressed, Loomis said.
"He stepped up and kept us competing," Loomis said. "The good thing was every time they scored, we scored, which was a very good thing for our team because it showed we could always answer the bell each time."
Joe Park and Jake Herrstrom pitched in relief as Herrstrom picked up the win (1-1).
Top hitters were Daniel Volk, who went 4-for-5 with 4 RBI; Herrstrom, 2-for-4 with 2 RBI, a single and a double; and
