VFW post expects Kansas’ top spot
Larry Meadows is hopeful the Tonganoxie Veterans of Foreign Wars post soon will be named Kansas' top VFW post.
Although Meadows, the local post commander, has not received any confirmation that Post 9271 won the recognition, he said his post has been very active this year.
"We're fairly sure we're going to do really, really well," Meadows said. "We might be second; we're expecting to be first.
Meadows said the contest ended April 1, but the top VFW posts won't be announced until the state convention -- in June.
"I would love to know right now, but I just don't know," Meadows said.
The contest is based on 16 categories, Meadows said, from increased membership to community service.
Post 9271 has qualified in 13 of those 16 categories. Some posts, Meadows, said have qualified in one or two.
Meadows listed some of the activities the post has been sponsored, including Voice of Democracy contests at the high school level and Patriot's Pen contests in junior high. The contests involve students writing essays on various topics pertaining to patriotism. Post 9271 also has hosted legislative coffees.
