Aunt Norie’s Sewing Room

By Eleanor Mckee - | Aug 16, 2006

Tired of putting that favorite lounging dress over your head?

Put a aipper down the front.

That favorite, cuddly, almost too warm, fleecy pullover topper. You almost never wear it for that very reason.

Put a zipper down its front and turn it into a jacket for those soon-coming chilly mornings and evenings.

“What did you do before zippers?” a busy young lady asked the other day.

That quickly took me back.

Oh yes, I remember when zippers first hit the scene.

When I first learned to sew it was snaps for those seams you didn’t want to button.

Oh what a tedious job it was to sew on those tiny snaps (I still avoid them whenever I can) and they could pop open, sometimes at a very bad moment.

I think you may still be able to buy snaps sewn onto a strip of tape or ribbon. You then sewed the tape onto the seams edge much like you attach a zipper, those were mostly used on ladies undergarments.

I promised recently to tell you the story of why men have the buttons on the right side and ladies on the left side.

When the first military uniform was designed, it did button as women’s garments do, but the soldiers wore their swords on their left sides and as they reached across with their right hand and pulled the swords out of their sheathes, the handles of the swords would catch in the front of their coats. So they were designed to button from the other side.

Don’t be selfish with those hugs now and God Bless.
