Local blood drive set for Feb. 10
The Tonganoxie Civic Club's blood drive is set for Feb. 10.
The drive, conducted by Community Blood Center, Kansas City, Mo., will be from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Feb. 10 at the Tonganoxie VFW Hall, 913 E. First. Individuals who want to sign up are asked to call Dr. Dick Dean at (913) 369-2030 or (913) 845-2164.
According to Community Blood Center, in 2005, 28,000 individuals in the Kansas City area needed blood transfusions. This year the local blood needs are expected to rise.
"When individuals normally think of essential community services, they think about the fire and police departments," said Dr. Jay Menitove, executive director and medical director of CBC. "However, because Community Blood Center is here to meet the needs of local patients, we would hope that individuals in our community would consider us to be just as essential."
Donated blood helps area hospital patients who depend on life saving blood donations. Just one donation can help as many as two hospital patients. CBC must collect at least 550 pints of blood every day to meet the needs of this area.
Elenor Lenahan assists Dean in planning local blood drives for the Tonganoxie Civic Club.
A few years ago, Lenahan said, Tonganoxie area residents usually donated about 100 units of blood at the drive. However, donations have decreased, she said, noting that the last drive collected only 50 units.
"We're hoping for 75 this time," Lenahan said.
Although it's advisable to make an appointment ahead of time to donate at the blood drive, Lenahan said people who don't have appointments are welcome to give blood.
