Moving Vietnam Memorial to visit Tonganoxie: You heard it right. Tonganoxie will receive a visit from “The Moving Wall!” The Moving Wall is the exact replica of the Vietnam Memorial based in Washington, D.C. It is an extremely long, ebony-colored marble headstone that bears the name of every soldier who lost their lives while fighting for their country. The moving version of the wall was built by John Devitt in October 1984.

The mother of Ann Zimmerman, wife of Rev. Harold Zimmerman, pastor of First Congregational church, died Tuesday morning, Jan. 23, 1996.

Springdale Scene: The Springdale community extends its sympathy to the Lawrence family in the loss of Keith Lawrence’s wife, Allison. Her service was Friday at 1 p.m. Keith and Allison lived at Pleasant Hill, Iowa.

Deaths: Peggy Louise Slawson, 70, Topeka, died Jan. 17, 1996. Harry R. “Brick” Sorensen, 74, Bonner Springs, died Jan. 17, 1996. Genevieve “Jenny” Eloise Tinberg, 74, Bonner Springs, died Jan. 22, 1996. Fred Zimmerli, 88, Linwood, died Jan. 19, 1996.

Living in a rural area may be objectionable to some, but to a 15-year-old boy, life in the country is full of advantages. Jonathan Myers, son of Gary and Jane Myers of Tonganoxie, is one who is contented with the country side of things. 25 years ago: Jan. 21, 1981

Rick Jamison, formerly of Linwood, has written a book called, “Calling Coyotes, and other Predators,” released by the Track Press at Prescott, Ariz., in 1980. He’s married, lives in Prescott. His wife, Linda, has a chapter in the book. They have two children, a daughter, Amber and one son, Jason.

Births: Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Mark announce the birth of a daughter, Kara Lynne, on Jan. 17, 1981. John and Jane Berry announce the birth of a son. They also have a 5-year-old son, James. Paul Edward was born Jan. 14, 1981. Mr. and Mrs. John P. Mosier announce the birth of a daughter, Lorlyn Lanette, on Christmas morning at Dallas Medical Center. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Fevurly, Halstead, announce the birth of a daughter, Jennifer Lynn, Jan. 16, 1981.

Deaths: Walter F. Coffman, 59, died Friday. Clarence Elbridge Whitmill, Tonganoxie, passed away Jan. 13, 1981, at the age of 67 years. William A. Olsen, 96, Kansas City, Mo., died Jan. 18, 1981.

Springdale News: Robert Heynen passed away in January in Bartlesville, Okla., at the home of his daughter, Pauline Mendenhall, at the age of 97, and was buried at the Old Mission Cemetery in Bartlesville. He was the minister of Springdale Friends Church in ’48 and ’49. Ethel Pearson Edmonds died Jan. 6 in a nursing home in Oskaloosa at age 95.

Linwood News: Services for Vera Naidine Heywood, 66, rural Linwood, were Tuesday, Jan. 13, 1981. Fred Leimkuhler officiated and burial was in Hubbel Hill Cemetery.

50 years ago: Feb. 9, 1956

Deaths: Mrs. Margaret Clark of St. Paul, Kan., died at her home Feb. 7, 1956. Mrs. Annabelle Druley, 65, Tonganoxie, died at the home Saturday. Albert M. Jump, 73, Independence, Mo., died Sunday night. John (Jack) Grems, 72, Lawrence, died Sunday afternoon in Lawrence. John William Wickey, Tonganoxie, a lifetime resident of Leavenworth County, died Feb. 6, 1956, at the age of 84 years.

Births: Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Freeman, Tonganoxie, are the parents of a son, born Feb. 6, 1956. Mr. and Mrs. Jackie Campbell are the parents of a son, Jamie Lee, instead of a daughter, as announced in last week’s Mirror. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Thomas announce the birth of a daughter, Virginia Carol, born Feb. 7, 1956, at home. Mr. and Mrs. M.R. McKinsey are the parents of twins, a son and a daughter, born Feb. 7, 1956. Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Giroir, Franklin, La, are parents of a boy, John Robert, born Jan. 11, 1956. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Metzger, Tonganoxie, announce the birth of a daughter, Jo Ann, on Jan. 26, 1956.

Roy Stotts, 72, a well-known Bonner Springs banker, died Friday after a heart attack.

75 years ago: Jan. 15, 1931

Mrs. August Lange, 85 years of age and a pioneer resident of Leavenworth County, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harry Kissinger, six and one-half miles northeast of Tonganoxie, last Friday afternoon about 4:30 o’clock after an illness of about two weeks. Mrs. Henrietta Somers Lange was born in Germany in 1845, and came to America with her parents at a very early age.

John McKeehen, age 32, passed away yesterday noon at the Memorial hospital in Lawrence, where he had been a patient since last Saturday having been ill with pneumonia for several weeks. His death was due to heart failure.

Two Topeka young men were killed shortly after dark last night, just east of Pleasant St. junction, at the south city limits of Tonganoxie, when their roadster, traveling at a high speed, crashed in to the rear of a truck ahead of them. The dead are Richard C. Lanning, 22, Topeka, and John Kuenzli, 30, rural Topeka.

Word has been received of the death in California, Dec. 19, of Chas. McFee, a brother of the late Mrs. Henry Hawkins.

Mrs. Jennie Still, age 68, wife of the late Stilleo Still, and a pioneer resident of this community, died Friday. Obituary next week.

Honey Valley school has 11 pupils. Pickens also has 11. Greenwood and No. 60 discontinued schools for 1930-3, are sending their pupils to other districts. Many district schools have less than half the attendance in former years.

Mr. and Mrs. Herman Schultz of Leavenworth are the parents of a girl, born Jan. 11, 1931, to whom they have given the name of Iris Virginia.

Stanwood: Mrs. Fred Farmer received a message last week, telling of the death of her father, E.A. Skinner of Strausburg, Mo.

100 years ago: Jan. 25, 1906

A Wonderful Convenience: Tom Chandler has just completed the installation of an Olds natural gas engine in the store of Sam Evans. It was quite a curiosity for most of the people to see an engine run by natural gas. The installation was a complete success and the engine works to perfection. Tom takes great delight in explaining his engine and he uses some very convincing arguments that he has the best engine on the market. He is the traveling representative for the Olds Gas and Gasoline Engine Works, and his territory is northwest Missouri and northeast Kansas.

The ladies of the Eastern Star cleared about $12 at their 10-cent lunch last Saturday.

Dr. and Mrs. Maxson, of Cunningham, have returned to their home. They were called here on account of the death of the latter’s sister, Mrs. Jake Pierce.

That glad and generous glow has passed and in its place is now the grim and flinty determination of the man who has to figure up how many weeks he must count pennies before he gets back what Christmas cost him.

A Philadelphia woman has died at the age of 137. It must have seemed a good deal longer to her than that.
