Wrestlers top Jags, Braves

By Shawn Linenberger - | Feb 8, 2006

Jacob Ferris and Jeff Frank went out in style.

The two seniors wrestled for the final time Thursday at Phil Lobb Gymnasium in Tonganoxie. And Frank finished a perfect 3-0 in the quadrangular, while Ferris went 1-1.

“It was a great way to send our seniors off,” THS coach Jeremy Goebel said. “Everyone up and down the lineup performed the best they have all year.”

Ferris had a chance to go undefeated on the evening. Wrestling against a Bonner Springs opponent, Ferris trailed most of the match, but after a reversal had his opponent on his back. Ferris couldn’t

earn the pin and dropped the match. He later picked up a win against Mill Valley.

“It was good for him to win that match,” Goebel said. “Especially on Senior Night, it meant a lot to him.”

Frank, meanwhile, continued his late-season surge with a perfect record at the quadrangular.

“As a coach, I kind of challenged him to step it up and finish the year strong and that’s what he’s doing,” Goebel said about Frank. “He’s definitely performing well right now, which everybody needs to be doing this time of the season. If we keep performing like this, we’ll turn a lot of heads come tournament time.”

With the victories, Frank improved to 18-16 this year.

Tonganoxie defeated Bonner Springs, 60-22, and Mill Valley, 58-24, before losing to Lansing, 65-18.

The Chieftains dropped Mill Valley, which has been ranked in Class 5A this season. Lansing is No. 6 in 5A.

Beau Waters (3-0), Ryan Stockman (2-0), Travis Adcox (2-0) and Shawn Roberts (1-0) finished the night without defeat.

Kevin Hamm, Jonathan Ferris, Derek Parrett and Matt Brock all finished at 2-1.

Brock’s lone loss came against Justin Broadbent, a state placer the past two seasons. Broadbent pinned Brock in the final period

“We had him beat going into the third period,” Goebel said. “I think he’s come a long way. With that package comes confidence and I think our kids are gaining confidence.”

Tonganoxie is hitting the home stretch as the Kaw Valley League meet will be Saturday at Perry. Regionals will be Feb. 17 and 18 in Eudora and state will run Feb. 24 and 25 in Salina.

At the league meet, Lansing will be the favorite.

Tonganoxie, though, could make some noise of its own against its KVL foes.

“If we wrestle like we did Thursday, we should be up there,” Goebel said.

The league meet begins at 9 a.m. in the Perry-Lecompton High School gymnasium.
