Chieftains post numerous wins at Piper invitational

By Shawn Linenberger - | Jan 11, 2006

Tonganoxie senior Jeff Frank was moments from earning a pin in the first period of a match against Basehor-Linwood on Thursday at De Soto.

Frank, competing in the heavyweight match, had his opponent on his back with seconds remaining in the first period. Time, however, expired, and the senior had to wrestle a second period.

It didn’t take long for Frank to take care of business in the second period. The senior defeated his Basehor-Linwood opponent and capped a 54-26 dual victory for THS against the Bobcats.

In the earlier match, Tonganoxie defeated De Soto, 69-9, although some points in both matches came from forfeits because De Soto and Basehor-Linwood had open weight classes.

Piper tournament

On Saturday, the Chieftains traveled to a junior varsity meet at Piper. Although scores were not kept, Tonganoxie went a combined 35-4 at the JV meet. Ryan Stockman was the top Chieftain wrestler at Piper. He went 5-0, while Wyatt Coffin went 4-0.

Beau Waters and Travis Adcox both finished the day 3-0 and Kevin Hamm, Jon Harris and Shawn Roberts each went 2-0.

Also competing were Josh McCutchen (3-1), Steve Davis (3-1), AJ Demaranville (3-1) and Matt Brock (2-1).

“Those tough meets are now paying off,” THS coach Jeremy Goebel said, referring to early invitationals at Kearney, Neb., and Goodland.

Dual time

Tonganoxie had dual matches Monday against Perry-Lecompton and Bishop Ward in Perry, but many wrestlers were held out because Kansas State High School Activities Association rules limit the number of matches in which wrestlers may compete.

“We wrestled good for what we had,” Goebel said. “It’s a no-win situation that you have to hold them out for meets, but that’s just the way it is.”

Subsequently, as was the case for Basehor and De Soto against THS last week, the Chieftains met the same fate at Perry.

Tonganoxie lost to PLHS, 69-6. THS went 1-5 in actual matches against the Kaws. Against Bishop Ward, the Chieftains fell, 42-38, but went 6-2 in actual head-to-head matches.

The Chieftains will compete at 9 a.m. Saturday at home at the Randy Starcher Memorial Invitational.
