Talented Baldwin squad probable team to beat at wrestling tourney

Watch out for those Bulldogs.

Baldwin, one of 11 teams at this year’s Randy Starcher Memorial Invitational, should be the team to beat at Saturday’s wrestling tournament in the Tonganoxie High gymnasium.

“Baldwin should win it,” THS coach Jeremy Goebel said. “Baldwin should be the favorite. They’re pretty loaded.”

The Bulldogs could have their best finish in Baldwin’s 36-year wrestling history with a team that, interestingly enough, includes five pair of brothers on the roster. Baldwin is the defending Randy Starcher Memorial Invitational champion. Last year, the Bulldogs scored 190.5 points, while Blue Valley West scored 124.5 for second. Louisburg placed third with 121.

Of course, there are 10 other teams at this year’s tournament that would like to derail Baldwin’s hopes for another invitational title.

Blue Valley West and Louisburg will be back to join Tonganoxie, Atchison, Bishop Ward, Central Heights, Horton, Oskaloosa, Sumner Academy and Topeka West — teams hoping to dethrone Baldwin.

As for the invitational host, Tonganoxie will be looking to improve on last year’s fifth-place finish. Last year’s squad had two first-place finishes and a second-place finish — those wrestlers have gradu-ated. Ross Starcher and Hunter Samuels both won their weight classes, while Garrett Palmer placed second.

Tonganoxie, though, does return some wrestlers who competed at last year’s Randy Starcher Memorial Invitational, including Jeff Frank, Wyatt Coffin, Ryan Stockman and Beau Waters, who placed third at last year’s invitational.

The tournament is set to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday in the THS gymnasium.
