Bulldogs place fourth at tourney
McLouth High’s tournament future looked promising after the first round of the Bulldogs’ home tournament last week.
MHS defeated Maranatha, 59-46, thanks to four players scoring in double figures. The win set up a rematch with Jefferson County North in the semifinals. Earlier in the season, JCN defeated McLouth in a game that MHS led at halftime.
The result of the rematch, unfortunately for McLouth, was the same. The Chargers, this time, outscored the Bulldogs in every quarter on their way to a 51-33 victory.
That loss set up another rematch for McLouth in the third-place game against Oskaloosa, McLouth’s arch-rival. In the team’s first meeting this season, at Oskaloosa, McLouth led much of the game before the Bears stormed back for a three-point victory.
The second meeting turned out to be far less exciting.
Oskaloosa held a 36-12 lead at the intermission and had a 58-19 lead after three quarters. McLouth did outscore Oskaloosa in the final quarter, but the Bears already had the game well in hand. OHS won, 62-36, and dropped McLouth to 4-7 on the year. Oskaloosa improved to 7-5.
In the championship game, Bishop Ward and Jefferson County North played an overtime period before Ward escaped with a 52-49 win.
Overall, the tournament had four games decided by five points or less, and two of those games went into overtime.
The McLouth boys will resume their season with a home game Friday against St. Mary’s Academy.
The McLouth girls carry a 2-7 record into the Jefferson County North tournament this week.
