Countywide group plans name change
Move would help with marketing
In its 25-year history, Leavenworth Area Development has used the name originally given to it by a group of Leavenworth area bankers in 1981.
Now, that organization is changing its name to better reflects its countywide emphasis on economic development activities.
During a recent board meeting, LAD board members voted to begin the process of renaming the group to the Leavenworth County Development Corporation. The vote tally was 11 members in favor to 6 opposed.
"This name helps us to show that, 'Hey, we're here to work for everybody,'" LAD director Lynn McClure said. He added, "There are those who believe a name change isn't necessary ... and those who believe we're overdue."
Changing the name "is a true sign that we're now countywide."
The name change won't become official until another successful vote is registered. A majority of the 22-member board is required before the switch can be made; the vote is scheduled to take place during a board meeting Feb. 9.
McClure said the name change received mild opposition during the board meeting because several members wanted to see a marketing plan devised before moving forward.
LAD officials are careful to point out that the organization is already working for economic growth on behalf of all cities throughout Leavenworth County: board members range from Easton to Tonganoxie, its Web site, www.lvarea.com, addresses business issues and happenings from each city and a new brochure encompasses all county markets as well.
Nonetheless, while speaking with those interested in Leavenworth County at trade shows or conferences, LAD officials sometimes have to correct those who mistakenly believe the organization is solely interested in the commercial prosperity of the city of Leavenworth.
"(Sometimes) people think it's the city of Leavenworth only," McClure said. "That's obviously not true. This (name change) is a great way to overcome that stigma."
