Big T squad preparing for zone play
The Big T American Legion baseball team will be sitting right around .500 when zone playoffs begin at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lawrence-Free State. Tonganoxie is scheduled to play the Blue Valley Huskies in that first-round game.
The squad, which is made up primarily of upperclassmen Tonganoxie High baseball players and a few former Chieftains playing college ball, was 12-11 headed into Tuesday's doubleheader against Hoyt-Royal Valley in Tonganoxie. The game did not meet The Mirror's deadline, but results from those games can be found in next week's edition.
John Volk, who will be a sophomore at Allen County, is leading the squad in hitting with a .491 batting average. His brother, Daniel Volk, is hitting .441, while Todd Brown is batting .388.
In the hits category, John Volk again is the team leader with 27, while Brown and Daniel Volk each have 26.
RBI leaders are similar also, as John Volk leads that statistical category with 23. Daniel Volk has knocked in 19 RBI, while Brown has 16 and Jace Waters 15.
Waters and Brown are tied for the team lead in doubles with six each, while John Volk has five. Lance Lamborn, a McLouth High product, and Josh Putthoff, who graduated from THS in 2005, each have one triple.
In the home run department, John Volk has two, while Brown has one.
The team's pitchers are led by Erick Lowe, who sports a 2.07 earned-run average. Lamborn has a 2.20 ERA, while Putthoff is at 2.63.
John Volk leads the team in strikeouts with 53, Putthoff has 32 and Lowe 31.
