Legion squads nearing end of season
Tonganoxie No. 2 takes one twinbill, loses another; now stands at 7-11
The once-beaten Leavenworth Legends came into Tonganoxie on June 30 to play a doubleheader against the Tonganoxie American Legion Post 41 No. 2 team. The Legends left with two victories.
The Legends won the first game, 9-2, and the second, 11-4.
In game one, the Legends scored one run in each of the first three innings while holding Tonganoxie scoreless and hitless.
Tonganoxie did muster one run on no hits in the bottom of the third. Lead-off hitter Blaize Oelschlaeger walked and advanced on a fielder's choice bunt by Patrick Gallagher. In trying to get the lead runner at second, the Legends threw the ball into centerfield and Oelschlaeger scored.
The Legends added another run in the fourth and another in the sixth, which helped them build a 5-1 lead.
"I really felt that if we could get our bats going we still had a chance at winning the ball game," coach Pat Bailey said. "Unfortunately that just did not happen. Their pitcher threw the ball extremely well and held us to only one hit."
The Legends added four more runs in the top of the seventh, which sealed the victory. Tonganoxie added another run and got its only hit in the bottom of the seventh. With one out in the inning, Boone Sorrell walked and stole second.
Sorrell later scored on a Travis Freeman single. Sorrell pitched the complete game for Post 41.
Tonganoxie did not fare much better in the nightcap, though the squad began the game showing some fight.
Tonganoxie scored in the top of the first.
Oelschlaeger walked to lead off the game, after stealing second, and scored on a Kevin Gill single. Gill, who made his first start of the season at pitcher, shut down the Legends in the bottom of the inning.
Unfortunately for Tonganoxie, Gill did not fare as well in the second, and Oelschlaeger pitched in relief. The Legends scored six times in the second inning and never looked back on their way to an 11-2 victory in five innings. Tonganoxie did get a run in the top of the fifth when Patrick Gallagher walked and later scored on a Chris Newton single.
Tonganoxie sweeps River Bats again
The Tonganoxie squad did not have long to reflect on the losses as they hosted the Leavenworth River Bats on July 1.
Chris Newton, who had been sidelined with a sore arm, took the mound in game 1.
He set the tone early, striking out two of the first three batters he faced and held the River Bats scoreless in the ball game. Tonganoxie scored two runs in the bottom of the first. Oelschlaeger doubled and scored on a Sorrell single. Rob Schlicht walked and scored on a James Bailey single. Tonganoxie added another run in the second. Gallagher walked and scored on a Schlicht single. Tonganoxie scored twice in the fifth. Travis Freeman singled, and Chris Newton walked. Both scored on a Sorrell double.
Tonganoxie added three more in the sixth when Holton and Gallagher both singled. Holton scored on a Kyle Newton single and Gallagher and Newton scored on a Oelschlaeger double.
That was all Tonganoxie needed to complete the shut out and walk away with the game one win.
"It was good to see Chris Newton back on the mound," coach Bailey said. "Hopefully we can keep his arm healthy for the final stretch of the season."
Tonganoxie continued its success in the second game.
Tonganoxie scored four times in the top of the first. Schlicht singled and scored on a Newton double. Newton later scored on a Sorrell double and Sorrell scored on a Bailey single. Bailey complted the scoring in the inning on a single by Holton.
Starting pitcher Boone Sorrell held the River Bats scoreless through 2 2/3 innings. Schlicht recorded the final out of the third. Boone gave up only one hit in the first inning.
"He had pitched seven innings the night before and I did not want to wear him out," coach Bailey said. "Rob came on in relief and also threw the ball very well."
Tonganoxie scored three in the top of the third. Freeman singled and scored on a Sorrell double. Sorrell scored on a Bailey double, and Bailey scored on a single by Holton. Tonganoxie added another in the fourth after a Freeman single. Freeman later scored on a Holton single.
The River Bats scored their lone run in the bottom of the fourth following a triple by Hunt and an RBI single by Haddock.
Tonganoxie scored three more times in the fifth when the River Bats pitching could no longer find the strike zone. Gallagher, Kevin Newton and Schlicht each scored in the inning.
