Day in the sun

By Shawn Linenberger - | Jun 14, 2006

What a great day for a run.

On Saturday, at the 19th annual Friends of the Tonganoxie Library Fun Run, 134 people entered to compete in the event. That marks a new record for entries at the running event.

The previous best was 115, according to organizer Debbie Zerrer.

“The weather was good,” Zerrer said. “It wasn’t too hot. It was cloudy, but it wasn’t too hot.”

Al Pursell, who is 77, was the oldest runner at the event, while the Huseman family had all seven of its family members participating in the event.

Last year, Theodore Roundface won the 5K event.

This year, he added another gold medal to his trophy case — this time in the 10K.

In the 5K, Levi Huseman was the top male finisher with a time of 17 minutes, 9 seconds. Huseman also runs on the Kansas cross country team. The former Tonganoxie High athlete will enter his sophomore season in the fall at KU.

Keith Dowell finished in 19:33 for second, while Thomas Powell, who ran with Huseman for the Chieftains in high school, finished third with a 19:51 time. In the women’s 5K race, Jeanie Reams won the event with a 22:48 time, while Lucy Daldorph placed second at 24:38. She was just ahead of third-place finisher Colleen Vannicola, who completed the course in 24:39.

In the 10K, Roundface finished in 37:21 for first in the men’s race. THS runner Justin Smith placed second in 39:09 and Brian Daldorph finished third in 40:49.

In the women’s 10K, Caren Chellgren took home gold with a 48:31 time. Kelly Pittman finished second (51:38) and Ronda Andrews placed third (53:48).

Zerrer said she saw many familiar fellow runners at the event, but also found several others she didn’t realize were runners.

“We saw a lot of people from town that run that you didn’t really know were runners too,” Zerrer said.
