Basehor library patrons approve new building

By Joshua Roberts - | Mar 1, 2006

A celebration of smiles, applause and congratulatory handshakes erupted at Kelley’s Bar and Grille Tuesday night.

And for good reason.

The pro-library crowd, which had gathered at the restaurant doubling as election headquarters, had just received word that the library had accomplished the most rare of feats for this area: an approved bond issue.

A half-hour later, enthusiasm was still high. Two top tier library officials, who had been in Leavenworth County monitoring the vote count, arrived at Kelley’s to a standing ovation and a greeting fit for conquering heroes.

“Thank you!,” library director Carla Kaiser shouted.

“We cried at the courthouse,” said Janice Garcia, president of the library board of trustees.

Funds from the bond issue will pay for a new facility on 158th Street, inside the Prairie Gardens subdivision.

Patrons of the 50-square mile library district approved the bond issue by a 2-to-1 clip, 848 to 434. The bond issue won in each of the four precincts.

Vote totals are unofficial until a canvas Friday. The count from Tuesday’s election is listed below:
ââ ¢ Advanced ballots: 174-Y, 78-N
ââ ¢ Basehor city: 307-Y, 153-N
ââ ¢ Fairmount township: 162-Y, 80-N
ââ ¢ Glenwood: 205-Y,123-N
