Tonganoxie girls advance at substate

By Shawn Linenberger - | Mar 1, 2006

One down and — the Tonganoxie High girls basketball team hopes — two more to go.

THS trounced Piper, 72-32, on Monday in the first round of the Class 4A Sumner substate tournament at Tonganoxie.

The first round game was a rematch from last year’s quarterfinals. Last year, as was the case this season, the Chieftains held the No. 1 seed, while Piper was the No. 8 seed. Last year, Tonganoxie prevailed, 67-30.

Although Tonganoxie never trailed, Piper stayed with the Chieftains through much of the first quarter.

Tonganoxie led, 19-8, after the first quarter and never looked back. The Chieftains were up at the half, 40-16, and maintained their lead throughout the game.

“It takes some teams some time to get a rhythm,” THS coach Randy Kraft said. “We’ve been a little slow starting lately.”

Once the Chieftains settled in, they rolled to their 20th win of the season, while Piper ended its season at 4-17.

The double threat of twins Rachel and Rebecca Bogard counted for 32 of Tonganoxie’s points. Rachel scored 17, while Rebecca had 15. Also in double figures were Ali Pistora with 12 and Tracie Hileman with 11.

Tonganoxie will meet Bonner Springs in the substate semifinals at 6 p.m. Thursday at Sumner Academy in Kansas City, Kan.

Bonner Springs (13-8) defeated De Soto, 62-51, Monday in that semifinal game. Tonganoxie will have to beat the Braves a third time this season to advance to substate finals. THS barely defeated Bonner Springs, 44-43, in December at Bonner Springs, but handily won the rematch a month ago, 51-24, in Tonganoxie.

If the Chieftains can avoid an upset bid from Bonner Springs, THS would play Eudora (16-5) or Sumner (18-3) in the championship at 6 p.m. Saturday at Sumner.

The Chieftains could enter a hostile environment at Sumner — especially if the Chieftains eventually face the hometown Sabres.

Pistora, though, has a solution.

“Just move the Tongie crowd to Sumner,” Pistora said. “Every game we have loyal fans.

“I know they’ll be there. We’re never alone.”

Tonganoxie 52, Basehor 37

Tonganoxie had a scare in its season finale. THS trailed by six after the first quarter and would have been down by 11 at the half, but Christy Weller scored a three-pointer just before the half and the Chieftains trailed, 27-19, at the break.

During the first half, sophomore forward Elizabeth Baska went down with a knee injury and didn’t return.

She also didn’t play against Piper.

The Chieftains, though, responded in the second half. THS shut out Basehor, 11-0, in the third and scored 22 in the fourth for a 15-point win. Pistora was top scorer with 14.

Tonganoxie 46, Perry 27

THS had a nine-point lead at halftime, and used a 14-3 third quarter to cushion its lead against Perry-Lecompton.

The Chieftains’ win against the Kaws ensured THS a third consecutive Kaw Valley League crown. Baska was top scorer with 18.
