At issue is whether the city should contribute to a project — estimated to cost $14 million — to upgrade six miles of County Road 1 between Tonganoxie and Kansas Highway 32. Turnpike officials say the road improvements are required before they will build the new interchange in Leavenworth County. The interchange would be the county’s first on an interstate highway.

Tonganoxie battled defending state champion Santa Fe Trail on Tuesday in Kansas City, Kan., but the Chargers held off a Chieftain attempt at a Kaw Valley League title. The Chargers won, 29-27, 21-25, 25-20, and remained perfect in league play, ensuring an SFT conference crown. Tonganoxie, meanwhile, dropped its second KVL contest after losing to Lansing the previous week.

College — bah humbug. My littlest chick has flown the coop and joined the flock of Jayhawks at Kansas University, and I am one lonely mother hen. It has been six weeks, so you would expect I would have adjusted by now, but no such luck.

On Sept. 27, someone hit and killed a cat that my kids had cared for since it was a kitten.
Tragic, yes, but more so because it happened as my children waited for the bus. They had to watch in horror as he was hit and, I pray, died instantly.
