McLouth voleyball takes fifth

By Shawn Linenberger - | Oct 18, 2006

McLouth High had a competitive day of volleyball Saturday at its home invitational.

The Bulldogs finished fifth of six teams in the round-robin tournament, but McLouth pushed three teams to three-game matches before losing those contests.

McLouth opened the tournament with Valley Falls. MHS won the first game, 26-24, but fell in the final two, 25-17, 25-19. In the second match, the teams were tied at 10, 13 and 15, but the Dragons went on a 7-0 run that the Bulldogs couldn’t answer and eventually fell by eight. In the third match, McLouth again stayed with Valley Falls, but the Dragons, leading 17-14, scored four straight points. MHS cut the lead to five, 23-18, but the Dragons scored two final points on their way to the win.

Valley Falls finished second in the tournament.

Jefferson County North was the only team to defeat McLouth in two games. The Chargers swept, but each game was decided by two, 28-26 and 25-23.

Jeff West eventually won the tournament title, but McLouth again won the first game, this time by a 25-22 score. Jeff West, though, battled back with a 25-23 win and then a 25-4 rout in the third match.

In the fourth match, McLouth bounced back and registered its first win of the day with a 25-17, 25-22 win against Bishop Seabury from Lawrence.

In the final match, McLouth faced Maur Hill-Mount Academy from Atchison. McLouth won the first game, 25-23, but lost the second, 25-20, and the third, 25-23.

MHS coach Amy Bergman said the team played better than the record might have indicated.

“I was very impressed with the team’s play throughout the day,” Bergman said. “All matches were very close and the girls worked very hard. I feel that they did very well with the new rotation that we had implemented the prior week.

“The Valley Falls and the JCN games were very close and the girls fought hard. The ending results from the matches did not reflect all of the great things that had happened throughout the day.”

McLouth now is 10-18 on the season. The squad will play Saturday in a Class 3A substate tournament in Wellsville. Other teams in the tournament with MHS and Wellsville include Pleasant Ridge, Jayhawk Linn, Oskaloosa, Kansas City Christian, Central Heights and Jefferson County North.

The winner of the substate tournament will advance to state on Oct. 27 and 28 in Salina.
