Bulldogs bounce Mustangs

September 13, 2006

McLouth is back on track.

The Bulldogs are now 1-1 on the season after outlasting Doniphan West, 27-20, Friday, at the former Midway-Denton High football field in Doniphan County.

"I think we played with some passion," said Harry Hester, who won his 15th game as McLouth High coach. "We were flying around. In week one, we were waiting for other people to make plays."

Doniphan West came out offensively in a Wing T, an offense the Bulldogs weren't expecting.

But Hester said his players handled the formation and some trick plays, including a double pass.

"I thought our guys adjusted well when they went to that."

The Bulldogs scored first on a 42-yard run by junior quarterback Mark Stewart in the first quarter.

Doniphan West answered with a rushing touchdown in the first quarter and a passing score in the second quarter for a 14-7 lead.

McLouth didn't score until late in the game the previous week in a 42-21 loss to Troy, but the Bulldogs scored all their points in the first half against Doniphan West -- including 20 in the second quarter.

"Our theme for the week was respond from week one and respond to everything that happens on the field, and I think they did that," Hester said.

Keling scored McLouth's first touchdown of the second quarter with a 21-yard interception return. The other two scores came when Stewart passed to Andrew Booth -- once for 21 yards and a second time for three yards.

"We still need to improve, but the effort was there and the passion, and we can't coach those things, so it's great to see that," Hester said.

McLouth will have its first home game Friday when Wathena visits the Stan Braksick Sports Complex in McLouth.

The Bulldogs will play a Wildcat team that now runs the rare single wing offense.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
