Chieftain teams cruise at McLouth

September 20, 2006

Call it a clean sweep for the Tonganoxie High boys and girls cross country teams Thursday at McLouth.

Tonganoxie runners claimed first-place medals in boys and girls varsity, as well as boys and girls junior varsity races.

In addition, the varsity teams won their team titles.

Matt Brock won the boys varsity race with a time of 17 minutes, 38 seconds, while Christy Weller won the girls varsity race with a 16:31 time.

In the junior varsity race, Tim Beeman won on the boys side (19:32), while Kayla Leffert won the girls race (16:58).

Weller, who clinched her second title of the season, said she liked running on the McLouth course.

"I like it a lot," Weller said. "It's super easy."

Weller hadn't competed on the course before Thursday. THS coach Phil Williams has sent his junior varsity team to the meet in the past, but this year also entered the varsity squads. Weller, a junior, has been on the varsity squad throughout her high school career.

The McLouth course winds around the Stan Braksick Sports Complex and throughout a nearby park and ends with the final 300 meters run on the track.

Weller, who also is a standout on the THS track team, appreciated combining two of her sports.

"Finishing the last 300 on the track really helped a lot because I'm so used to the 800 and having to kick at the end," Weller said.

As a team, the Tonganoxie girls finished with 42 points, and Perry-Lecompton finished behind them in second with 87.

In the boys standings, Tonganoxie also breezed to a team title, scoring 31. Jeff West finished a distant second at 88, while Christ Prep placed third at 96.

Kansas City Christian, which finished first at the Tonganoxie Quadrangular earlier this season, finished fifth with 137. The defending Class 3A champions, however, did not field a full varsity team for the meet.

Tonganoxie will continue its season Thursday with a home invitational that attracts roughly 20 teams to Tonganoxie. The event will begin about 4 p.m.

McLouth cross country

McLouth's Aliaa Ghaddar is trying to adapt to running in America. Ghaddar, who is an exchange student from Lebanon, said she's adjusting to two things in Kansas: a hotter, more humid climate and the terrain.

In Lebanon, meets are run on streets, rather than up and down hills.

"It's easier to run on the streets," Ghaddar said with a smile.

The runner seems to be adjusting well. She has improved her time each meet so far this season. On Thursday, she was McLouth's top runner, finishing 27th with a 19:21 time. Other McLouth runners were Elizabeth Turner and Galia Gardner, who finished 46th and 47th respectively. Turner finished in 29:26, while Gardner finished five seconds later.

Although Ghaddar isn't a Mclouth native, she felt the need to perform well in front of the Bulldog faithful.

"I think I had to do much better," Ghaddar said.

The McLouth girls didn't finish with a team score because they do not field a full team.

The McLouth boys, meanwhile, placed 11th at their home meet.

Bulldog senior runner Ryan Saxton was the Bulldogs' top finisher. He completed the race in 40th with a 19:57 time.

"It felt really good this time," Saxton said about running on the home course for the final time.

The Bulldogs next will compete at Thursday's Tonganoxie Invitational.
