Springdale News

August 22, 2007

David and Laurie Vancer, who live in the old Mohan farm house near the top of the hill between the Knapps and the Schwinns, have lived there about 12 years. They have two daughters, Allison and Jennifer, who live in Lawrence. They have five grandchildren. They flew to Ft. Benning, Ga., during the second week of August and attended the 2007 Army Ranger Rendezvous. Our ranger son (Sgt. Michael Vancer) recently returned from his fourth deployment and upon graduating from Jumpmasters School was able to join us for the festivities. Ranger Rendezvous marches the Regimental Change of Command, but also combines the three ranger units for a friendly competition that involves sporting events, timed obstacle courses and combative fighting. The event kicked off with a mass tactical jump, which involved almost 1,000 airborne/ranger soldiers parachuting onto a landing zone within a 20-minute time frame. We also had the opportunity to meet a few ranger veterans (mostly from the Vietnam era), who shared their own combat experiences with the younger colleagues. The bond these rangers shared was a powerful experience to witness. God bless all your soldiers and their loved ones! Michael and his wife, Kristen, have lived in Savanah, Ga., a few years where he is assigned to Hunter Army Airfield.

Orie and Jan Nelson attended the Leavenworth County Agricultural dinner on July 19 at the Lansing Community Center.

The Nelsons' daughter, Camille, and grandchildren, Cody and Jennifer, visited Springdale for a week at the end of July and first week in August. A 16th birthday party was celebrated for Jennifer at the Nelsons' home.

On Aug. 10, the Nelsons played host to the monthly Henry Leavenworth Car Club potluck dinner. Thirty members from the Leavenworth, Basehor and Tonganoxie area traveled to Springdale. Springdale attendees were Anabel and Wayne Knapp and Barb and Carl Slaughter.

L.J. and Gertrude Chrisman left Aug. 5 to visit Gertrude's sister and husband, Phyllis and Bill Demoranville, in Tomball, Texas. They returned home Aug. 10.

Billy and Brenday Schwinn, Bret and Kyle left Aug. 11, for business in Abilene. And traveled church on Aug. 12, with Matt and Kristie Lucas and family. They returned home Aug. 13.

The visiting pastor and family at Springdale Friends Church on Sunday Aug. 12, enjoyed lunch at Pullman Place in Leavenworth with Ray and Jeanette Cole, Luke and Emily and Evelyn Schwinn.
