THS can’t overcome suffocating Basehor ‘D’
Basehor Even the usually relaxed David Walker was visibly frustrated with how difficult it was to score points Friday against Basehor-Linwood.
After a THS turnover in the second half, the Chieftains coach turned around and smacked a chair with his right hand in aggravation.
"It's the first game of the season and you have some emotions and adrenaline running," Walker said after Tonganoxie's 47-31 season-opening defeat. "I think the effort on our behalf was there, but I just think we have to be a little bit more efficient on the offensive end. You can't give them opportunities because they'll take advantage."
Here's how low-scoring the game was in the first quarter: THS senior Gabe Belobrajdic was the only Chieftain to score in the opening period. He only had two points. THS still trailed by six.
"We got good shots, but not much was falling," senior guard Keith Wentz-Hall said. "We dished it inside and we dished it back out, but just couldn't get anything to fall."
Tonganoxie only converted 3-of-17 field goals in the first half. The game read like a football score, 20-7, at the half.
Wentz-Hall gave Basehor its biggest scare when he cut the lead to 10 to end the third quarter. The senior guard took a few dribbles from the top of the key, floated in the lane and ducked his head past two BLHS defenders to convert the layup. Tonganoxie trailed, 33-23.
"At the end (of the third quarter), I took it to the hoop and luckily it went in," Wentz-Hall said of the layup. "We thought we had a shot the whole game. In the end, it just got away."
Basehor (1-0) opened the fourth quarter with a 5-0 run, which forced Walker to call timeout. The Bobcats' lead rapidly increased to 15.
BLHS seniors Tanner Swafford and Chandler Schaake led the Bobcats with 18 points a piece.
Belobrajdic led Tonganoxie with 10 points and seven rebounds.
THS crept back within 12 with 5:40 remaining when junior center Austin Smith converted a layup, plus the foul. Smith hit the foul shot to cut the lead to 40-28. That's the closest Tonganoxie would get the rest of the night.
"I told the guys they have nothing to hang their heads about," Walker said. "That's a talented team across the way that we just played tonight."
Tonganoxie (0-1) will play in the Central Heights Tournament this week near Richmond. The Chieftains played their first game Tuesday night, but the game continued past The Mirror's press time. Tonganoxie also will play Thursday and Saturday, at times to be determined.
