Chieftains split home openers against Lansing
Senior Liz Baska scored 24 points and grabbed 16 rebounds in Tonganoxie's 52-42 home victory against Lansing on Thursday.
Baska, who had 12 points by halftime, was 8-of-14 from the field. The THS guard/forward also hit two three-pointers and was 6-of-7 from the free throw line.
Senior forward Shannon Carlin added 10 points and 11 rebounds for Tonganoxie, which improved to 4-1 on the season.
The Chieftains carried a 30-22 lead into halftime and led, 42-31, after the third quarter.
THS struggled from the free throw line; it converted only 12-of-26 (46.2 percent). But the Chieftains were strong in all other phases, particularly rebounding. THS grabbed an eye-popping 50 rebounds Thursday night, compared to Lansing's 36.
The Lions dropped to 3-2 on the season.
Tonganoxie will face St. Teresa's Academy (Mo.) at 4 p.m. today at Avila University in Kansas City, Mo.

After the first quarter, it appeared Tonganoxie was onto something. The Chieftains hit their first six shots of the night. In fact, the only shot in the first quarter they missed was a half-court prayer with a second remaining.
THS trailed Lansing, 13-12, after the first quarter and trailed, 29-17, at intermission.
Lansing (3-2) put an end to all THS threats to open the second half. The Lions had a 22-point third quarter explosion. They put the game out of reach with a 15-3 run to open the second half.
Tonganoxie didn't help its own cause, either. The Chieftains (1-4) committed 22 turnovers, compared to Lansing's 13.
Gabe Belobrajdic led THS with 18 points and eight rebounds.
Tonganoxie will play again at home at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday against De Soto.
