Tonganoxie High School students loaded a Salvation Army truck last Wednesday as a Kansas City television cameraman recorded their work. Last week’s charity drive, “Improve the World” had incredible results and brought news crews from Kansas City, Lawrence and Topeka.

Phillip V. Thomas, Tonganoxie, was one of 96 Kansas men and women honored Tuesday, Nov. 11, for their duty as soldiers and nurses in the Battle of Normandy, the D-Day invasion that began the end of World War II. (Mr. Thomas was presented with a French Medal of Freedom for his participation in the invasion of Normandy on June 6-11, 1944. Mr. Thomas was an Army Ranger with the 5th Battalion and landed in Vermille, France.)

The family of Mr. and Mrs. Dean Wensel, of Tonganoxie, invite you to attend an Open House in honor of Dean and Mylinda’s 60th wedding anniversary. The celebration will be from 1-5 p.m. at their home Saturday, Nov. 29, 1997.

November marks the 50th wedding anniversary of Ben and Delores Myers of Tonganoxie. Their children are hosting a reception to honor them in the parlor of the Tonganoxie United Methodist Church on Nov. 29, 1997.

Birth: Tony and Mary Rose Carr are proud to announce the birth of their daughter, Maddison Nicole, on Nov. 5, 1997.

Deaths: James Calvin Bradley, age 74, Rogers, Ark., died Nov. 9, 1997; Patricia Jean Durkes, 63, McLouth, died Nov. 11, 1997; Donald Leo Kesinger, 65, of the Lake Shore Estates Community, near Ozawkie, died Nov. 13, 1997.

25 years ago: Nov. 17, 1982

Miss Susan Putthoff, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Putthoff of Tonganoxie, has been selected to enter the 1982 Miss Kansas Pageant to be in Overland Park on Nov. 20-21.

Three local teenagers performed Saturday in an area Piano Festival on the Kansas University campus in Lawrence. Karen Ketchum, Sherry Marquardt and Lori Meadows all received ratings of “Excellent” for their selections.

Mr. and Mrs. Wallace E. Williams, Tonganoxie, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Nov. 20, 1982, at their church at 201 N. Seventh St., in Kansas City, Kan.

Death: Clarence “Dude” Norris, 75, Leavenworth, died Nov. 6, 1982.

Jarbalo Jottings: The Rev. and Mrs. Lyle Roe will soon celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary at their home in Williamstown.

Did you notice how many flags were displayed Veterans Day on Fourth Street, the business district? Only two. Shilling Electric Co., and Lenahan Hardware. Did I miss one? (From Helen Schilling’s column, Happenings In and Around Tonganoxie.)

50 years ago: Dec. 5, 1957

Birth: Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kramer Jr., announce the birth of a son, James Eugene, on Dec. 2, 1957.

Death: Mrs. Leta Lucille Cowan, Baxter Springs, passed away Dec. 1, 1957, age 50 years.

Mr. and Mrs. S. W. McBroom of Tonganoxie, observed their 62nd wedding anniversary, Wednesday, Nov. 27, 1957.

The Curry family Thanksgiving dinner was at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Walter P. Smith this year.

Linwood: Joseph S. VanNoy, age 59, of Kansas City, died Nov. 28, 1957.

Dr. Philip Stevens has been a patient at the K.U. Medical Center. He is expected to return home this week.

Butch Uhlrich paid an unexpected visit to his aunt, Pat Black, at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Pat lost her appendix to the surgeons and about eight hours later, Butch arrived – same deal.

75 years ago: Nov. 10, 1932

Nellie Dorhn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Dorhn, won the large cake given away last Saturday evening by Musil’s Bakery. The cake was a large white layer cake, four decks high, beautifully decorated, and was given to the one guessing closest to its correct weight. The guesses ranged all the way from two to 15 pounds and there were over 200 of these. Nellie came in only a few minutes before eight to make her guess, which was 6 lbs., 13 oz., the exact weight of the cake.

Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Rumsey entertained with a dinner Sunday in honor of the 40th wedding anniversary of Mrs. Rumsey’s sister, and husband, Mr. and Mrs. C. S. Hagerman of Lawrence.

Mr. and Mrs. Martin Decker Jr., of Easton, announce the birth of a son Saturday, Nov. 5.

Mr. and Mrs. Dallas Buchanan announce the birth of a son last Thursday, Nov. 3.

Mr. and Mrs. J. L. McWilliams announce the birth of a daughter Oct. 27, to whom they have given the name, Betty Lou.

100 years ago: Nov. 21, 1907

John McEnulty is sick with typhoid-pneumonia fever.

Will Cronemeyer is building a house at Bonner Springs for his cousin Louis Cronemeyer.

Harvey Jones closed his meat market Saturday evening. This leaves two meat markets in town.

Thos. Chandler recently got a cinder in his eye, and an ulcer formed on his eyeball. He is undergoing treatment at a Topeka hospital, but was home over Sunday.

The local Knights of Pythias will have some company from Leavenworth tonight. Also some from Linwood.

A new ruling of the Post Office Department forbids postmasters from answering any telephone inquiries about mail.

The people who are promoting a milk condensing plant here have negotiated for 10 acres off the south end of the 40 acres owned by Mrs. E. E. McKeehen in the northeast part of town, and Tuesday, had Harry Perkins come out and make a survey of the tract. They have put in an application to the Northwestern for a switch to run to the ground.
