KDOT urges drivers to stay home

A snowstorm that began Saturday morning is making road conditions dangerous, the Kansas Department of Transportation reports.

In a news release disseminated about noon, KDOT said “driving is hazardous, visibility limited, freezing ice on windshields, roads are snowpacked and dangerous. : Please advise everyone to stay home and stay off the roadways for their safety!”

In the Topeka area, Interstate 70 was closed; Eastbound I -70 is closed at Milepost 388. Eastbound traffic is detoured to K-99 then across to US-24. Westbound I-70 is closed at Auburn Road. Traffic is detoured to US-75 then across to US-24.

The National Weather Service forecast for the area this afternoon calls for periods of snow with areas of blowing snow and a high near 38. It will be breezy, with a north-northwest wind between 23 and 26 mph, with gusts as high as 32 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. Total daytime snow accumulation of 4 to 8 inches is possible.
