Tonganoxie city council briefs

By Caroline Trowbridge - | Jan 10, 2007

Realtor might have a buyer for city land

Tonganoxie Realtor J.W. Evans told city council members Monday that he might have a buyer for 50 acres the city owns west of Linwood.

Several years ago, the city purchased the property, in hopes of drilling water wells on the land. Part of the property now is being farmed. And the city now is working on a project to bring water to the city from the Board of Public Utilities in Kansas City, Kan., rather than from the Kansas River.

“I have a party who is interested in purchasing 100 acres in this locality,” Evans said.

City council members said they could not respond to Evans’ inquiry on Monday. He said he’d check with them in a few weeks.

City to buy cameras for 11 police cruisers

Tonganoxie police soon will have cameras in their patrol cars.

On Monday, city council members unanimously voted to approve 11 cameras. Funding for the $61,411 will come from two sources. The police department will use $15,000 in the 2007 budget that was slated for weapons.

“We felt the cameras were more important than the standard-issue weapons, at this time,” Lt. Billy Adcox said.

And the city will seek bids for lease-purchase financing for the balance.

Council OKs increase pay for service

Council members agreed on Monday to increase by $100 a month the amount the city pays for its police department dispatcher and city answering service.

Eleanor Vestal Answering Service provides services to the city from 7 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., seven days a week, for $1,100 a month. The council agreed the $100 increase, effective this month, should come from police funds.
