Obituary: Donald Duane ‘Coach’ Haima

Graveside services for Donald Duane “Coach” Haima, 49, Ozawkie, were Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007, at Oak Hill Cemetery, Lawrence.

Mr. Haima died Jan. 9, 2007, at his home, of complications from diabetes.

He was born Oct. 20, 1957, in Waynesville, Mo., the son of Melvin and Charlotte Roach Bone. He graduated from Eudora High School in 1975 before moving to Ozawkie.

Mr. Haima worked as assistant manager of Pladium and manager of Pladium Plus in Lawrence, drove cabs for Yellow Cab and A-1 City Cab, in Lawrence, and held a variety of other jobs through the years. From 1991 until 1997, he was a volunteer basketball and baseball coach for the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department. He was affectionately known as “Coach.” He had to resign from coaching because of declining health.

He married Linda Willis on Nov. 15, 1981. She survives of the home. Other survivors include his parents, Melvin and Charlotte Bone, Lawrence; a daughter, Kristina Elisa Shatswell, Lawrence; two sons, Donald Duane Haima Jr., Lawrence, and Johnathan Andrew Haima of the home; and two grandchildren.
