Firework displays to light area skies
There are no organized public fireworks display scheduled in Tonganoxie, but residents still have plenty of chances to see fireworks extravaganzas in the area on Independence Day.
"Honoring America's Heartland Heroes," Basehor's Independence Day celebration, takes place from 5 p.m.-10 p.m. Wednesday at Basehor-Linwood High School athletic grounds. Events begin with a Moonwalk and food and concessions at 5 p.m. At 6 p.m., a parade will begin at 155th Street and Leavenworth Road. Among the parade participants will be Miss Leavenworth County Paula Prosser. From 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., "Soul Salvation" will provide musical entertainment. The fireworks display begins at 9:15 p.m.
The "Lights over Lawrence" Fourth of July fireworks show sponsored by the Lawrence Jaycees will be begin at 6 p.m. in Burcham Park, Second and Indiana streets. Music begins at 6 p.m. with fireworks at dusk. Free bus service sponsored by the Lawrence Journal-World will shuttle people from downtown parking lots to the park starting at 6 p.m.
The McLouth Fourth of July Fireworks Display is scheduled to begin at dusk at the Stan Braksick Sports Complex at McLouth High School.
In Eudora, the city's Independence Day celebration will be at the Eudora Middle School parking lot, 2635 Church St. Festivities begin with concessions going on sale at 7 p.m. Starting at 7:30 p.m., the parking lot will be filled with music played by disc jockey Rex Burkhardt. Fireworks are scheduled for dusk.
The city of Lansing is sponsoring its seventh-annual Fourth of July Fireworks Show at dusk at the Lansing Business Center, a half-mile east of the McIntyre Mann Carpet store on East Gilman Road at U.S. Highway 7.
And Fort Leavenworth's Independence Day Celebration gets under way at 4 p.m. by Merritt Lake at the fort. The event begins with concessions, children's games, a Salute to the Union and a free concert by "The Breeze." Fireworks begin after dusk. Organizers say visitors to Fort Leavenworth should expect delays at the security entrances.
