Jo Ann Monroe played host to a birthday dinner on Thursday, May 10, for her mother, Opal Welch, who turned 88 years old. Those attending were Barbara Schmidt, Frances Seber, Kristi Vornholt, Mary Zule, Becky Spink, Amy Sloan, Jackie Schwinn, Brenda Schwinn, Angela Sparks and Ethan Monroe. A wonderful time was had by all.

This past Friday, I attended the Kansas Law Enforcement Memorial in Topeka to salute the men and women who lost their lives enforcing our laws and keeping Kansas families safe and secure. This memorial reminds us that we have a continuing duty to find new ways to prevent future violence against law enforcement officers.

About 4 p.m. Sunday, Todd Box’s motorcycle slid underneath him as he was changing from the left lane to the right lane on U.S. Highway 24-40 near Laming Road. The 43-year-old Basehor man slid along the road with his bike until it came to a stop. A deputy advised Box that an ambulance was on its way, but Box refused treatment. Box received road rash on his left arm and shoulders. He was wearing a helmet. Box’s 1999 Harley-Davidson sportster was taken away on a trailer.
County asks districts to help fund truancy program

¢ Around 2:20 p.m. May 16, video footage captured a person putting a package of food in his pants at Stout’s Corner in Linwood. The footage also revealed the same suspect going back and placing a second package of food in his pants before leaving the store without paying. The store clerk was not aware of the theft until reviewing the footage the next day. The estimated value of the stolen merchandise is $2.50.
