  • Around 2:20 p.m. May 16, video footage captured a person putting a package of food in his pants at Stout’s Corner in Linwood. The footage also revealed the same suspect going back and placing a second package of food in his pants before leaving the store without paying. The store clerk was not aware of the theft until reviewing the footage the next day. The estimated value of the stolen merchandise is $2.50.
  • Around 3:47 a.m. Saturday, a man was pulled over at the intersection of Kansas Highway 32 and Leavenworth County Road 1 for speeding. An officer smelled alcohol and asked the 42-year-old Lawrence man to take a field sobriety test, which he failed. After refusing to take a Breathalyzer test, the man was arrested for DUI and transported to the Leavenworth County Jail.
  • On Saturday May 19, Wylie Denton, 20, and Blair Nicely, 17, were transported to University of Kansas Hospital via helicopter after Denton, the driver, lost control of an all-terrain vehicle on 251st Street, about one mile north of McIntyre Road. The Merriam man entered into a ditch after he lost control and both he and the Mission Hills girl were thrown from the ATV. The report stated that the ATV continued to roll for some distance and overturned after going through a barbed wire fence. The two were treated at the scene by Leavenworth County EMS before being airlifted. Neither was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. Alcohol was not a factor in the accident.
  • Leavenworth County deputies were dispatched to the 2600 Block of 187th Street in Leavenworth, around 6:49 p.m. Sunday, after a suspicious man was seen sitting in a driveway there. Deputies made contact with the 41-year-old Leavenworth man and found him to be intoxicated and in possession of alcoholic beverages. The man was arrested and taken to the Leavenworth County Jail.
  • Around 5 p.m. Monday, Molly Livers, 45, of Bonner Springs and her passenger Emily Heptig, 23, of Leavenworth, swerved off of the road while traveling west on Kansas Highway 32 to avoid a collision with a vehicle driven by Olga Sanchez from Kansas City, Kan. Sanchez, 36, was driving her vehicle north on 158th Street when she failed to yield at a stop sign at the K-32 intersection. Livers’ vehicle went into a ditch on the northwest corner of the intersection, avoiding contact between the two vehicles. There were no injuries reported at the scene. Sanchez was cited for failure to yield at a stop sign. Everyone at the scene was wearing their seatbelt.
  • Around 10:40 a.m., Monday, 57-year-old Un Suk Welsh of Basehor lost control of her vehicle after she started sneezing while driving north on 163rd Street, about one mile south of Donahoo Road. Welsh went off the road on the east side and overcorrected, crossing the road and entering a ditch on the west side. Welsh tried to steer out of the ditch and flipped her vehicle over as she re-entered the roadway. Welsh walked back to her home to report the accident. EMS and the Fairmont Fire Department responded. After complaining about pain, Welsh was transported to the University of Kansas Hospital. Welsh was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the accident.
  • A house on the 1200 block of 20th Street was broken into sometime between May 11 and May 15. Among the items missing were a Lennox wood-burning stove, about 1200 feet of trim lumber, an assortment of floor tile and a ceiling fan. The home is being cared for by Century 21 Realty since its previous owner was evicted after foreclosure proceedings had begun. Loss was estimated at $5,400.
  • Ronald Eller, a 38-year-old Bethany Mo., man, overturned a vehicle belonging to the Union Pacific Railroad around 10:30 a.m. May 15. Eller was heading south on 158th Street near South Loring Road, when the right front tire dropped off the pavement on the west side of the street. Eller attempted to get the wheel back onto the pavement but was unsuccessful and overturned the vehicle. Eller was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured. The 2006 GMC 8500 sustained a substantial amount of damage.
