November 20, 2007

The Tonganoxie High volleyball team led the Chieftains fall sports in postseason honors after finishing the season 32-13 and registering a third-place finish in the Class 4A state tournament.

Seniors Sami Franiuk, Tracie Hileman and Hannah Herrstrom made the Kaw Valley All-League team. Senior Liz Baska made honorable mention.

Franiuk led the Chieftains with 325 kills on the season. She also had a team-high 72 service aces. Hileman was second in kills (269) and digs (356). Herrstrom had a team-high 496 digs.

Franiuk also cracked the first team of the Kansas Volleyball Association's All-State team. Hileman made the second team and Herrstrom made the third team.

To put the all-state selections into perspective, only six players made the first team. An additional six made the second team, while a final six made the third team. That's 18 all-state selections out of 768 volleyball players in Class 4A. Tonganoxie had three of them.

The Chieftains finished the fall season 2-15 and lost in the first round of regionals.

Cross Country

There's not an official listing of Kaw Valley All-League selections, but runners crack the first team if they finished in the top 10 of the Oct. 10 league meet at Perry. Runners who finished in positions 11-20 made the second team.

The THS boys registered four runners on the team. Junior Matt Brock was a first-team selection after finishing the league meet in fourth place.

The THS girls also had four on the team. Freshman Alex Hauk, senior Christy Weller and sophomore Andie Jeannin placed eighth, ninth and 10th, respectively, at the league meet and made the first team.

Junior Addy Phelps made the second team after her 19th-place finish at league.
