School board resignation tendered
A longtime Tonganoxie School Board member has stepped down.
School Board president Leana Leslie announced at Monday's board meeting that Bob DeHoff had resigned his position, effective immediately.
DeHoff, who has been on the board for 10 years, was not at Monday's regular meeting.
DeHoff said Tuesday he had been thinking about stepping down for some time and that his resignation was not triggered by recent events.
"It was a tough decision ... I needed to make right now," Dehoff said. "It has very little to do with what's currently going on."
Since December, a plethora of key administrators have left the district and been replaced, including principals at the high school, middle school and elementary school.
Last month, the board voted to buy out a contract for the district's newly created position of director of operations, Jamie Brun, after only a few weeks on the job. One morning during his short stay in Tonganoxie, Brun made a 911 call from his cell phone near the district office because of an argument he was having with Superintendent Richard Erickson.
Meanwhile, Erickson has urged the board to tighten its spending because of budget woes.
"I've been there for 10 years and came to a conclusion it was time for me to move on," DeHoff said.
A 1979 Tonganoxie High School graduate, DeHoff replaced former board member Bill Walker in 1997.
DeHoff is a designer for a commercial dishwasher manufacturing company in Edwardsville.
Erickson read this prepared statement at Monday's meeting:
"Mr. Bob DeHoff has been an exceptional board member and public servant for the Tonganoxie School Board for the past 10 years. Mr. DeHoff is a hardworking and dedicated individual who always studied issues and he was well-prepared to deal with the difficult issues that board members face. Mr. DeHoff served as a board president for two of the 10 years that he served on the board. Mr. DeHoff also served on the Kansas Association of School Boards Insurance Committee and he was the USD 464 representative to the KASB Governmental Relations program. Mr. DeHoff has been responsible for and supported a number of positive changes in the Tonganoxie School District during his tenure, such as improved school facilities, improved student achievement, additional curricular and extra-curricular offerings for students, and strong fiscal management of the school district. As a business owner, he had an important perspective and viewpoint in regard to the business and employee facets of a school district. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Mr. Bob DeHoff for the past 10 years and I am going to miss his great work and leadership on the USD 464 Board of education."
The board did not discuss any immediate plans to seek a replacement for DeHoff.
Current board member Diane Truesdell replaced former board member Rick Lamb in January 2006. She then won election in April in a race against Alan Theno.
