Author to speak at library meeting

By Sharon Moreland - | Oct 31, 2007

Start celebrating the holiday season at Tonganoxie Public Library with some shopping, author visits and a Festival of (Mini) Trees! The fun starts at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, when Lisa Harkrader talks about writing her book “Airball:My Life in Briefs” at our Tonganoxie Library Teens meeting. Own a copy of the book? Bring it in to be signed or buy a copy that evening.

From Nov. 12-16, the Library and Parents as Teachers are hosting activities to celebrate the statewide reading program, “Kansas Reads to Preschoolers.” The theme this year is Safety and the books are “Do Kangaroos Wear Seat Belts?” by Jane Kurtz and the novelty book “It’s Time to Call 911.” We have three opportunities for your preschooler to listen to a state trooper or Tonganoxie Fire Department volunteer read one of these books: Monday Storytime at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday Parents as Teachers Playgroup at 10 a.m. for ages 3 and under, or a special evening story time at 6:30 p.m. Thursday Author Jane Kurtz will be at the library at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16. We will be giving away some copies of the book at each event and you can buy a copy of “Do Kangaroos Wear Seat Belts?” on Friday and have the author sign it. The library will be closed for Thanksgiving from 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, through Friday, Nov. 23.

We kick off our first-ever Scholastic Book Fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 24. Become a Friend of the Library to receive your invitation to the pre-sale on Saturday. The fair will be open to the public from Monday, Nov. 26 to Friday, Nov. 30. Children can build their very own book at the Klutz Build a Book program at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 26. Each kit costs $6 and all proceeds from the Book Sale go to build your library’s collection.

We will end the month with another fundraiser, the Festival of (mini) Trees. You may be familiar with the Lawrence Festival of Trees; well, we want to have a festival of our own, only in miniature. Local businesses, organizations and families are invited to donate an artificial miniature Christmas tree (max height of 3 feet) decorated in a whimsical and creative theme. These will be sold by silent auction, with proceeds used to buy Books on CD and new digital audio books, called Playaways. While downtown on Thursday, Nov. 29 for the Mayor’s Christmas Tree Lighting, be sure to stop by the library to see the illuminated trees and have some free cookies and hot cider at our opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m.

The Tonganoxie Public Library is at 303 S. Bury. For additional information, pick up our November calendar, visit the library’s Web site at tonganoxielibrary.org or call us at (913) 845-3281.
