Chieftains dominate at Lansing Invitational

By Mirror Staff Reports - | Apr 3, 2008

The meet might have been dubbed the Lansing Invitational, but Tonganoxie High’s boys and girls track teams probably had the host wishing the Chieftains hadn’t made the guest list.

Not only did the girls dominate the invitational with a 110-point margin between themselves and Lansing to secure a first-place finish, but the boys tied host LHS for the team title Tuesday.

The Chieftains girls won 10 of the 18 events to capture their title. The boys won six events.

Girls Track and Field

Junior Roni Grizzle won both the shot put and discus events and set a new school record in the shot put with a throw of 45 feet, 5 and ¾ inches.

Her older sister, senior Roxi Grizzle, won the javelin with a throw of 139-6. Chrissie Jeannin took second in the event with her throw of 113-8.

Senior Tracie Hileman won the long jump, triple jump, high hurdles and finished second in the high jump to rack up 38 points for the Chieftains.

Senior Christy Weller took first in the pole vault and was a part of two first-place relay teams.

Weller, sophomore Andie Jeannin, junior Megan Puhr and freshman Christina Rubio won the 4×400-meter relay. Sophomore Abby Eisman combined with Weller, Andie Jeannin and Puhr to take first in the 4×800-meter relay.

Boys Track and Field

Senior Tyler Gurss took first in the discus with a throw of 127-1/2.

Senior Kendrick Whittington won the high jump with a leap of 6-2.

Another senior, Gabe Belobrajdic, won the javelin with a throw of 158-7.

Chieftain freshman Jeremy Carlisle won the 800 with a time of 2:02 and sophomore D.J. Lindsay took first in the 200 with a time of 23.39.

The Chieftains also won the 4×400 relay. Carlisle, Lindsay, sophomore Bret Koch and Austin Stone raced THS to that win.
