Chieftains’ bats back on track

By Mirror Staff Reports - | Apr 22, 2008

? After scoring 14 combined runs in their previous five outings, the Chieftains bats finally got hot on the road Monday.

The Tonganoxie High baseball team scored 20 runs in a doubleheader sweep at Santa Fe Trail to get back above .500 with a 9-1 rout and an 11-7 comeback victory.

In the first game, Logan Forbis started on the mound, threw six innings and struck out 12 Cyclones while allowing just three hits and two walks in his third victory of the season. At the plate, Forbis drove in three runs and hit a home run.

Jared Lamb went 3-for-4 and scored twice in the first victory. Rob Schlicht, Tyler Lupton and Jace Waters each had two hits for the Chieftains (6-5). Lupton had two RBI and Schlicht doubled, as did Keith Wentz-Hall.

The second win didn’t come as easily, but the Chieftains rallied from a five-run deficit, tallied 14 hits and plated 11 thanks in large part to a huge eight-run fourth inning.

Schlicht blasted a two-run homer in the critical frame and Jace Waters hit a three-run shot.

Schlicht, Lamb, Waters, Forbis and Wentz-Hall all had two hits for the Chieftains. Schlicht and Lamb each crossed the plate twice in the second win of the day.

The Tonganoxie baseball squad will be one of eight teams competing in the Butch Foster Memorial Baseball Classic this week at Community America Ballpark, home of the Kansas City T-Bones.

In the opening round of the classic the Chieftains will face Spring Hill at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Depending on the outcome of that contest, THS will play against either Basehor-Linwood or Paola on Friday afternoon.

St. James Academy, Perry-Lecompton, Bonner Springs and Holton comprise the rest of the tournament field.

The Chieftains have not played Spring Hill, Paola or Holton this season, but have faced the other four teams. Tonganoxie defeated Bonner Springs and Perry-Lecompton to open the season. THS lost to Basehor-Linwood, 2-1, and St. James Academy, 8-0.

The championship game of the classic will be played at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
