First fun run nets $300 for PE department
Tonganoxie Middle School physical education instructor LeAnn Bond was encouraged by the turnout for the PE department's inaugural 5K fun run and walk.
The event, held Saturday at the district's cross country course on the TMS campus, raised roughly $300 after expenses were paid.
"Our goal was 50 for our first year, and we had 44, so I thought that was a great turnout for our first year," Bond said. "We advertised in Tonganoxie only, so next year, we're going to expand our registration to some different towns and other Web sites.
"And I think we're gong to make it a different weekend so we can advertise more at school, so we can get the school kids involved."
The money will go toward the purchase of climbing walls at the middle and high schools. A climbing wall runs about $15,000, Bond said, so it will take some time before the PE department can raise enough money.
"The whole PE staff put their time in and I just thought it was very successful and I thought it was well organized," Bond said. "It was just a very fun activity. We really look forward to doing it next year and years to come."
She noted THS cross country coach Phil Williams marked the course and Jennifer O'Bryant made the T-shirts for the event.
"We couldn't have done it without them," Bond said.
