Lansing supplants Mill Valley as KVL king

August 20, 2008

After four years of supremacy, Mill Valley's reign as the top athletics department in the Kaw Valley League is over.

Since The Mirror started naming the KVL Athletics Department of the Year in 2004, Mill Valley won every time until now.

The new king of the KVL hill is Lansing, which tallied just one more point than four-time defending champion MVHS for the 2007-08 sports year. The Lions edged the Jaguars, 97-96.

Lansing won four league titles in 07-08, tying for first in football and winning volleyball, girls cross country and golf outright.

The Lions were tri-champions in football, tying Perry-Lecompton and Bonner Springs (the three schools played different amounts of league games because of their Class 4A and 5A distinctions, but each finished with one KVL loss). Lansing volleyball went undefeated in KVL play, finishing ahead of one-loss Mill Valley. The Lions' girls cross country also scored a critical win against MVHS at their league meet, where the Jaguars finished second. At the KVL golf tournament, the Jaguars finished 12 strokes ahead of second-place Basehor-Linwood.

Runner-up Mill Valley still won three league championships of its own. The Jaguars' boys and girls captured KVL team titles at the league track meet and the girls soccer team won another crown for MVHS. The girls tracksters finished ahead of Tonganoxie, while the boys held off Bonner Springs. The girls soccer team went 5-0 in KVL play, finishing ahead of 4-1 Lansing.

Tonganoxie finished third in the KVL standings after coming in second last year. The Chieftains tied Basehor-Linwood for a league title in girls basketball as both teams finished 11-1.

BLHS finished fourth overall for the second straight year. Along with the co-title in girls hoops, the boys basketball team also brought home a KVL championship, going 11-1 and finishing ahead of 9-2 Perry-Lecompton.

Piper finished fifth in the KVL. Although the Pirates were the only team with no titles, they were solid in nearly each of their 12 sports. Their best finish came in softball, where they finished second to league champ Perry-Lecompton.

With the help of that softball title, the Kaws jumped from ninth in the KVL last year to sixth in 07-08. PLHS also was one of the football tri-champions.

Another of those tri-champs, Bonner Springs, was seventh in the KVL. To go with the football co-crown, the Braves boys cross country team won the KVL meet, finishing ahead of Santa Fe Trail.

SFTHS finished eighth in the KVL standings. The Chargers wrestling team won the KVL tourney, finishing just seven points ahead of runner-up Lansing.

Bishop Ward came in last in the KVL, but the Cyclones still won a league baseball title, topping second-place Piper.

Immaculata wasn't included in the KVL this year because the Raiders are no longer in the league and only participated in football.

This year, Turner will join the KVL ranks as the Bears begin league competition. Turner will be the league's largest school and compete in 5A.
