Letter to the editor: A possible expressway

August 27, 2008

<p>Democrat Candidate for the Kansas State Senate

To the editor:

Over the last couple of months I have met with several elected officials in Leavenworth and Lansing and a majority of them mentioned to me their interest in an expressway connection from Kansas Highway 7 at McIntyre Road to Interstate 435 at Wolcott Road, which is part of Kansas Highway 5. In the Aug. 19 article in the Leavenworth Times, there were questions raised about how the cities of Leavenworth and Lansing and Leavenworth County would advocate for this project at the state and local level.

When elected as the Kansas State Senator from the Fifth District, I would have the connections and experience to advocate on behalf of the expressway connection and I will push senate leadership to have a Wyandotte/Leavenworth senator on the Senate Ways and Means Committee, which is the committee that will appropriate the money for the new comprehensive transportation plan. As a former commissioner of the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kan. I studied and approved millions of dollars of economic development projects and infrastructure needs. As a former legislative consultant at the state capitol I understand the legislative process and would hit the ground running to represent the needs of the Leavenworth and Lansing area, along with the entire fifth district.

I have already scheduled a meeting with the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kan. Mayor/CEO Joe Reardon and you can be assured that this issue will be on the agenda for discussion. As a state senator, my job will be to represent you and do everything I can to make Leavenworth County's priority a reality.

MS. Kultala, What makes you think we want the connection to 435? Weren't you FIRED as a commissioner? We do not need another "Professional Politian" that sides with the Governor, one whom worked for another county as a consultant and has not walked in our shoes. You are so out of touch with what we really need. Get to the really issues, LOWERING our taxes, REDUCING government spending (Like firing consultants), get rid of the FAT in our education system and stopping ILLEGAL immigration.

Ms Kultala, I realize that you're running for office as a neophyte politician and as such you believe that promising expensive projects to other politicians in the region is the way to garner their support. That's a typical cronyism type, big-project approach, probably having Governor Sebelius's support as you are her pick for this Senate seat. Unfortuneately for you, I'm looking for a Senator to represent me-- not the Governor.
Building this expensive project, will entail even more eminent domain property seizures from farmers and homeowners thoughout Wyandotte and Leavenworth county areas and tax increases to pay for it and the bonds needed to build it. I would think Wyandotte folks could use a break from all the seizures and property revaluations they've already had. I know I can't afford any more tax increases to fund extravagant projects-- I'll be doing good just to fill my gas tanks (car and propane) and pay my electric bills. Since you've bought into the global warming fiction I know those costs too will be going up so you can help the Governor build windmills instead of supplying Kansans much cheaper more abundant coal powered electricity.
