Letter to the editor: A possible expressway

By Staff | Aug 27, 2008

To the editor:

Over the last couple of months I have met with several elected officials in Leavenworth and Lansing and a majority of them mentioned to me their interest in an expressway connection from Kansas Highway 7 at McIntyre Road to Interstate 435 at Wolcott Road, which is part of Kansas Highway 5. In the Aug. 19 article in the Leavenworth Times, there were questions raised about how the cities of Leavenworth and Lansing and Leavenworth County would advocate for this project at the state and local level.

When elected as the Kansas State Senator from the Fifth District, I would have the connections and experience to advocate on behalf of the expressway connection and I will push senate leadership to have a Wyandotte/Leavenworth senator on the Senate Ways and Means Committee, which is the committee that will appropriate the money for the new comprehensive transportation plan. As a former commissioner of the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kan. I studied and approved millions of dollars of economic development projects and infrastructure needs. As a former legislative consultant at the state capitol I understand the legislative process and would hit the ground running to represent the needs of the Leavenworth and Lansing area, along with the entire fifth district.

I have already scheduled a meeting with the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kan. Mayor/CEO Joe Reardon and you can be assured that this issue will be on the agenda for discussion. As a state senator, my job will be to represent you and do everything I can to make Leavenworth County’s priority a reality.
