Chieftains fall to Eudora in semis
Eudora The Tonganoxie High girls basketball team suffered its first setback of the young season on Tuesday night at the Cardinal Invitational, falling, 55-38, to host Eudora in a semifinal.
The Chieftains (1-1) played the Cardinals (3-0) close for three quarters, but a 7-0 EHS run to open the fourth gave Eudora its first double-digit lead of the game and THS, dressing just eight players with Lindsey Fatherley, Molly O’Hagan and Jessi Stinson out of the lineup with injuries, didn’t have enough gas to keep up. After a Chrissie Jeannin three cut the THS deficit to 10, Eudora closed the game with an 11-4 run to seal the victory.
Jeannin scored nine points, and led Tonganoxie with eight rebounds and five assists. Senior forward Roni Grizzle led the THS offense with 12 points by being aggressive inside and going 8-for-11 from the free-throw line. Junior guard Andie Jeannin was the only other Chieftain in double figures, scoring 11 and hitting three of six three-point attempts. Abby Eisman scored four points with a pair of field goals and Lauren Hall hit both of her free throws.
Tonganoxie trailed, 16-7, in the second quarter before going on a run that gave them their final lead of the game. Andie Jeannin hit a three that cut the deficit to three. Hall hit two freebies with 2:21 remaining in the half to narrow the EHS lead to one, and Grizzle hit both ends of a one-and-one to give Tonganoxie its final lead, 17-16, with 1:56 to play in the second quarter.
The Chieftains didn’t have an answer for Cardinals senior forward Haley Epperson, who scored a game-high 25 points and grabbed eight rebounds to land Eudora in the tournament championship game.
THS will play Piper in the third-place game at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
