Third-quarter lull again bites THS
The Tonganoxie High boys basketball team fell to 0-2 on the season at the Paola Invitational on Tuesday night as a third-quarter lull plagued their production for the second night in a row.
THS led by four at the break, but only scored five third-quarter points against Turner, and lost, 54-46.
Junior forward Keaton Schaffer led Tonganoxie with 19 points. Senior forward Jamie Everett added 10.
Coach Shawn Phillips, who was an assistant coach at Turner before taking over at THS this season, lamented the third-quarter woes as the Chieftains were outscored by nine in the third Tuesday a day after Harmon won the third-quarter war, 24-11.
“We have to adjust the intensity we have coming out in the second half,” Phillips said, noting that his players had trouble running their offensive sets, spent too much time standing in place and, at times, seemed to be inattentive.
Also troublesome for THS was production at the free-throw line, where the Chieftains went 13-for-30.
The coach said afterward he tried to stress the importance of seemingly minor details in basketball, telling the players that they need to do the little things right, like cutting hard off screens and setting up their teammates.
The loss put THS in the seventh-place game at Paola on Friday against Wellsville. Phillips said the Chieftains need to return to their up-tempo style, which they couldn’t find against Turner, and execute much better if they want to leave the tourney with a victory. After playing without much confidence on Tuesday, Phillips opined, he said the team needs to find itself at practice before journeying back to Paola at the end of the week with a better understanding of what it takes to compete.
