Souper Bowl Spectacular on Super Bowl Sunday.
It was an unbelievable finish for the 2008 Souper Bowl at the McLouth United Methodist Church. After three weeks of cheering, sacking and handing off, the members sitting in the pews on the east side of the sanctuary brought in more cans than those sitting on the west side for a second year in a row! In fact, a record 1,618 cans of soup were brought this year, beating last year's record by 130!
Each year the friendly competition between "God's Holy Rollers" and the "McLouth Canners" has yielded larger returns. This year, the weekly tallies provided an exciting game as each team overcame a deficit and passed the other. Week by week, the score was posted on the church's reader board, and each week a different team was leading! But the Rollers finally sacked the Canners when their final total came to 1,068 cans brought to church between Jan. 15 and Feb. 3, compared to 550 from their opponents.
The runner-up this year is responsible for delivering the cans to local food banks, serving our fellowship hour the following Sunday, and serving at a "soup kitchen" sometime between now and next year's competition.
Of course, the real winners are the people who will find food on their table as a result of God's generosity.
