Offensive struggles doom Chieftains

By Mirror Staff Reports - | Feb 20, 2008

? The Chieftains hit some serious road bumps – including turnovers, foul trouble and illness – at Bonner Springs on Friday, and fell to the Braves, 40-32.

The Tonganoxie High boys basketball team had trouble scoring against the BSHS defense.

“They went zone, which slows the pace of the entire game down,” coach David Walker said. “Then they did a little trapping there to get us out of sync.”

By the end of the game, the Chieftains had 21 turnovers and just 23 field goal attempts.

“We didn’t take care of the ball, we weren’t running our offense entirely like we had been the last few weeks,” Walker said. “When you get out of sync offensively you have the tendency to turn the ball over and not get as many field goal attempts.”

Keaton Schaffer (10 points) was the only Chieftain in double figures.

“Gabe (Belobrajdic) was in foul trouble early and Tyson (Letourneau) was really sick,” Walker said. “It kind of looks a little lopsided on the scoring, but Keaton did a really good job finding ways to score.”

Austin Smith came off the bench and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Despite the setback, Walker said THS can still take something positive away if it learns from its mistakes.

“The next time a team starts to put pressure on you, you can’t get excited and lose focus,” Walker said of the lesson his players should receive. “We took a small step backwards and hopefully we can learn from it.”

Scoring by quarters:

Tonganoxie 8 8 8 8 – 32
